College of American
Pathologists 2008 Office
Expansion
Client: College of American Pathologists, Deerfield, IL
Project: Expansion of existing office into an 18,500 square foot space
Design Features
- Create a space that is akin in design, program, and functionality to the company's Northfield headquarter office
- Design a flexible layout to enable future growth
- Plan and construct a sustainable environment
Challenges
- Selecting an optimal office space among three building alternatives that provides the functionality desired in the layout and design plan
Key Achievements
- TKA designed the space and selected furnishings to allow for future expansion opportunities
- Created natural light and daylight views for all occupants, laying the offices and ancillary spaces toward the core of the building with low-height workstation partitions along the perimeter
- Installed sustainable materials, including cradle-to-cradle carpet, low-toxicity paints, adhesives, sealants and laminates throughout the entire space
- Designed a new, large training/conference room with kitchen area to accommodate company meetings and presentation
- Re-used existing building components such as walls, doors, millwork, equipment and ceiling, in order to limit the demand for raw finite material
- Monitored indoor air quality during construction to provide for the well-being of workers and neighboring building occupants by sealing off and cleaning the construction areas on a daily basis
- Recycled all demolition and construction debris
