How Sustainability
Crosses all Boundaries
By: Thomas Kapusta, President, TKA + Partners
The goal of creating a sustainable community is like saving for retirement at an early age, with a long-term vision of securing your future well being. Working towards sustainability is achieved in a similar way. It's based on smart planning that addresses the current needs of a community while looking forward to help meet the needs of future generations.
This strategic master planning applies to business, civic and campus life, to include campus planning for corporations, educational institutions, and hospitals. We are starting to recognize how sustainability crosses all boundaries, where smart corporate planning is not unlike smart urban planning.
Smart planning for sustainability emphasizes principles that apply to all types of built communities, supported by principles of long-term vision, broad scope, collaboration, education and evaluation. It is strengthened by incorporating LEED certification standards that require superior integration of environmental, social and economic practices to achieve long-term value. Building on smart growth principles and practices, based on LEED standards, establishes an approach to development and renewal that actively involves stakeholders in shaping, defining and implementing the built environment.
As sustainability initiatives cross over from corporate to campus to community life, we will reap the rewards of fostering a robust community life, economic prosperity, and a commitment to environmental sustainability.
